A CLEARINGHOUSE FOR COMMON CORE RESOURCES & TEACHING STRATEGIES (SOCIAL STUDIES)

INTRODUCTION

Common-Core-Icon1.jpg

The Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies are the culmination of a broad-based national effort designed to create the next generation of K–12 standards to “ensure that all students are college and career ready in literacy" no later than the end of high school.

QUICK FACTS:
  • Grades 6–12 Common Core literacy standards in history/social studies do not replace existing content standards but rather supplement them.
  • The Common Core has national “anchor standards,” but allows states, such as California, the leeway to amend the precise wording of those standards. Thus, each state's Common Core standards may vary in exact wording.
  • Common Core standards focus more on depth and skill development, while the existing state standards focus more on content.
  • The present work, is led by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and the National Governors Association (NGA).
  • On a personal note, because social studies is greatly politicized, its future (current state content standards and assessments) is still tenuous. Common Core Testing will begin the 2014/2015 school year.
